Julian Assange is defined as a hacker, a hacker who has stolen and been given secret documents concerning the United States. Julian Assange is famous for WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks is a website that Assange created to store secret information that he has hacked. He is working on specific projects to release to the public to show the people how the government/president is being unjust. (Raffi) When Julian was about twenty years old, 1991, he hacked into the Canadian telecom company and ended up getting caught, but he compromised with the men and convinced them not to call the police. (Raffi) Later on, Assange was confronted by the police and was charged and was told that he may receive 10 years of prison. Meanwhile, the judge had declared that evidence was not found and they had to release him. Wiki Leaks began in 2006 when he began getting interested in human struggle towards ones life versus the government rulings. (Raffi) He was a student who was all about peace and love and he began thinking about how, as people, we rely and put all trust in government affiliated things. He created Wiki Leaks to, emphasize that his mention is to expose injustice, not to provide an even-handed record of events. (Raffi) Wiki Leaks is his way of showing freedom of speech and providing evidence on what our government really does behind the scenes.
Assange is unwrapping information and putting the information that he has found in Wiki Leaks. Depending on what issue he lets out next, this could start a war. Americans may start getting angry once revealed the information in Wiki Leaks. Assange has also mentioned that, by releasing the information he would allow judgment to occur in the open. (Raffi) Whether this is a smart decision or not, this is real life. He’s already starting on Project G, which will be presented in the near future. His last project, Project B, was presented to the National Press Club. Project B was a video called, Collateral Murder, which was a video that he had found, that showed Americans killing innocent Iraqi people. (Raffi) He was trying to focus more on the fact that Americans were killing these innocent men because the Americans assumed they were carrying guns, when in fact, one man was carrying a camera. At the beginning of the video, Assange had shown and written about the Iraqi men that had been killed. (Raffi) He explained that the men were part of great families and had great jobs, and this was to prove that Americans are being sloppy when they are at battle. Almost two years ago Assange added another unjust act that Americans are doing to Wiki Leaks. American soldiers had a type of device that was able to control hidden road bombs that were all around Afghanistan and they were able to control the bombs to go off whenever they had liked them to. (Raffi) Assange attached to Wiki Leaks a documentation that is on excel and this document showed all the killings American Soldiers had done using this device to control the Afghanistan’s road bombs. (Rogers, Scruton, Walsh) Soon after this release on Wiki Leaks, the Army had started constructing new devices, but this certain device is still being used by some soldiers.
My research question is, should American college students stand up and protest against the act of injustice which took place in Afghanistan by Americans that Julian Assange has released in Wiki Leaks for the public to view? This question is a pretty interesting question because you don’t hear too much news on college students protesting on technological issues in life. And then, it makes one think about if students would protest if something does affect them. I did some research and found that there was a big protest with North Carolina State University students about the Kent State shootings that had happened in 1970. (BroadHurst, 2010) There were thousands of students who were against war and they wanted a share their voice. They had also, while protesting, the National Guard shot a few students and wounded a couple students. This made the student body a little angrier. This shows that if something is bothering a group of college students, then yes protest will arise. In another article, it showed that if a student is knowledgeable about an issue and that issue affects the student, then that student will react and create a voice for themselves. (Russo, 1995) The reason for more out spoken people than others is clearly from the way they were brought up. (Russo, 1995) Now from these articles, I concluded that if Wiki Leaks releases anything that would upset college students on their level, then a protest in some way may occur.
